The Meaning of Dianoia
The name Dianoia is drawn from classical philosophy, most notably from the works of Plato and Aristotle, where it describes a form of reasoned, disciplined thought.
For Plato, dianoia refers to discursive reasoning — a logical, step‑by‑step process used to build justified conclusions. It involves exploring multiple perspectives, examining relationships, and progressing systematically toward understanding, rather than relying on intuition or assumption alone.
Aristotle later described dianoia as an intellectual virtue, encompassing both theoretical understanding and practical wisdom. In this sense, it represents the ability to reason well — to move beyond conjecture and opinion, and toward knowledge that can inform sound judgement and action.
